It will be interesting to see how the current period of time is looked at. Are we the era where Trump changed America? Where Brexit shook Europe? Where Artificial Intelligence changed employment? Or where we became addicted to Netflix? In reality, the latter is most likely true. While we may talk about the other pieces in the news at length, in reality, Netflix plays a bigger part in all of our lives.
Today Netflix has 140 million different users (and that is not including all the people who are piggybacking off other accounts). These users watch 165 million hours of content every day. That means that the average person watches 1 hour and 11 minutes of content each day. While that may not sound like much, consider how important Netflix is becoming to our lives if we are willing to dedicate so much time to it.
Netflix is the 20th highest-ranking site for the number of page visits. It is no surprise to see Google top of the list with Youtube in second place. Netflix will continue to rise in these rankings as its strategy has been well planned and well-executed. While the company originally started as a content aggregator it has moved smoothly into creating original content. Netflix saw that a lot of the content that people watched previously was based on a few popular shows and movies. If the rights owners created their own platforms a few years ago Netflix would have been in big trouble. While it had a fantastic platform it didn’t own the content.
However, the content owners moved too slowly. While Disney now has its own content platform and will compete well, and other content owners will follow suit, there is no putting the Netflix beast back in the box. Netflix has grown to a size that it can now commit huge amounts to create original content. The company has played the game well and earned our hour and 11 minutes. Let’s see how much of our time it holds in a few year’s time.
