The most valuable coins in the world

Coin collecting doesn’t seem like the most interesting hobby in the world until you hear the price that some coins can fetch. Below we list the top five most valuable coins of all time. After reading you may consider becoming an investor.

Edward III Florian (1343)

The oldest coin on the list, approaching its 700th birthday is currently valued at just under US$ 7 million. It is only one of three of these coins to have survived and is valued so highly because of its rarity and age.

Brasher Doubloon (1787)

The doubloon is young compared to the Florian but has a better story. The minter was trying to convince the US government at the time to do away with gold coins and use bronze instead. The limited minting of this coin and the story behind it have made the coin worth US$ 7.4 million at last auction.

Saint Gaudens Double Eagle (1907)

A beautiful coin that was hard to make, resulting in only a few being in circulation. This coin is also made famous because the inscription “In God we trust” was actually removed, soon to be brought back in by the god-fearing government.  This coin was last sold for US$7.6 million.

Double Eagle (1933)

The double eagle was reprinted in 1933 with “In God we trust” now featuring again. However, the US president recalled the coins because he no longer felt comfortable with people having gold. He made the coins illegal and so they continue to be to this day. When one was recently purchased by a private buyer the government forced him to split the US$7.6 million with them, cheeky.

Flowing Hair, silver copper dollar (1794, 1795)

The most expensive coin in the world is now worth over $US10 million. It goes for such a price as it is believed to be the first silver coin ever minted by the US government. Find this little gem and you can retire early.
