Everyone in the world knows the famous painting The Last Supper and its artist Leonardo Da Vinci. Yet while we would recognize it anywhere and have seen hundreds of copies of it since, there is so much more to know about the original. Read on to hear three fascinating facts behind the Last Supper.
It captures a moment
If you ask anyone what the Last Supper is about, you will likely be told that it is quite obviously about the last supper of Christ before he was crucified, the clue is in the name after all. However, the truth is a little more exact. The Last Supper painting captures the exact moment after Jesus announces that he will be betrayed. In each face, we see the shock upon hearing this. While many people focus on the face of Jesus in this picture it is Judas the traitor who is most interesting. The man has been caught and is still holding his bag of silver.
Forget the Da Vinci Code
The famous book spoke about hidden messages and more. Yet the secrets of the Last Supper have been under discussion since long before the Dan Brown novel. One theory suggests that the person to the left of Jesus is not John at all but Mary Magdeline. Allegedly he was dating the woman which throws out a lot of things we have been told by the bible.
The Doubting Finger
The other notable figure in the picture is Tomas. He stands beside Jesus with a finger in the air. Most people believe this is a subtle nod to the role Tomas will play later in the bible. When Jesus returns Tomas doesn’t believe it is him. Jesus lets Tomas poke the hole in his hands as proof that the real Jesus has returned. The doubting finger of Tomas is raised in the Last Supper for all to see.
